Workshop Overview

We enjoy offering opportunities to learn kitchen skills alongside basketmaking. The Scandi Stars and Scandi Buns workshop is no exception. You will make a beautiful two-toned Scandinavian styled star, just in time for Christmas and a tray of delicious cinnamon buns. The cinnamon buns (kanelbullar) became popular across Scandinavia when the Roman spice traders introduced Sri Lankan cinnamon. The kanelbullar are particularly popular for the festive season across Scandinavia.

What You Will Learn

During this workshop, you will:

  • How to handle materials and equipment for willow work safely and correctly;
  • How to use the skills of tension to create a shape and finishing techniques to complete your work;
  • Discuss the care of your Scandinavian willow star;
  • How to work in the kitchen environment safely and use kitchen equipment correctly;
  • How to make spiced cinnamon buns.

What You Will Take Home

At the end of the workshop, you will take home a willow star in the Scandinavian style and a tray of soft, fluffy, spiced cinnamon buns (kanelbullar).

Important Details

The Rural Skills Centre will provide:

  • Trained and qualified tutors working together to combine the disciplines of sweet breadmaking and basketmaking;

  • All materials and equipment to make your ‘Scandi’ Star and your ‘Scandi’ buns;

  • Tea, coffee and lots of homemade cake;

  • A light lunch (please let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements;

  • Parking; and · Accessible facilities.

The workshop is suitable for complete beginners in both disciplines and for those who are complete beginners in one discipline and wish to develop the skill in the other.
