Workshop Overview
Living willow lattice trees are contemporary, stylish and add height to your garden or patio. You will make a 36 rod lattice tree using freshly harvested rods grown on our own willow beds, here on the farm. The intricate weaving technique ensures that the iconic diamond shapes that make the lattice design forms a tree shaped structure. The finished work will measure approximately 1-1.5m high.

| 10:15 | Select living willows for your lattice tree and establish the framework for your design. Learn how to interlock living willow through weaving techniques. |
| 11:30 | Morning break with homemade cake of the day. |
| 11:45 | Work on shape, consistency and rhythm in design. |
| 13:00 | Lunch |
| 13:45 | Continue working on shape, consistency and rhythm in design. |
| 15:30 | Afternoon break with more homemade cake. |
| 15:45 | Secure the tops of the tree and discuss its care. |
| 16:00 | Workshop finishes with celebratory group photograph. |
What You Will Learn
During this workshop, you will learn:
- How to handle living willow correctly;
- Safe and correct use of tools and equipment;
- Discuss the way in which willow is selected and harvested for living willing lattice trees;
- How to create a basic open lattice weave;
- How to establish ‘flow’ using basketry techniques/patterns;
- Discuss the care of your living willow lattice tree.
What You Will Take Home
At the end of the workshop, you will have completed you own potted living willow lattice tree as well as developing your skills for living willow sculpture.
Important Details
The Rural Skills Centre will provide:
- All materials and equipment to make your living willow lattice tree;
- Tea, coffee and lots of homemade cake;
- A light lunch (please let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements;
- Parking; and
- Accessible facilities.
Please bring:
- A waterproof apron or clothes that you happy to do gardening in
- A pair of gardening gloves if you don’t like getting your hands muddy
