This hybrid workshop combines two skills into one day of learning. You will learn how to make a willow vase using traditional stake and strand techniques such as waling and randing followed by a masterclass in floral arrangements taught by Steve from the Florist of Cardiff. This is a fully packed heritage crafts day filled with lots of learning. Not only will you be able to display a beautiful and unusual floral arrangement in your home (or give as a gift) but you will also be able to own your creativity and amaze friends, family and neighbours when you tell them you made it.

During this workshop, you will:

• Examine the essential equipment used for basketmaking;
• Examine the essential equipment used for floristry;
• How to handle willow safely;
• Follow health and safety procedures when using basketmaking and floristry equipment;
• Discuss the way in which willow is prepared correctly for basketmaking;
• Learn stake and strand techniques for basketmaking;
• Learn how to lay down a border;
• Use traditional floristry techniques to create a bouquet;
• How to trim cut flowers for an arrangement;
• Learn placing techniques to create a balanced arrangement;
• Discuss techniques for keeping your cut flowers looking good for as long as possible;
• Discuss the care of your willow vase to get years of enjoyment.

Learners will take home a finished willow vase complete with a beautiful floral arrangement.

The Rural Skills Centre will provide:

• All materials and equipment for the workshop will be provided;
• Tea/Coffee and lots of cake;
• Lunch (let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements);
• Parking; and
• Accessible facilities.

This workshop is suitable for anyone with an interest in basketmaking and floristry.
